Making Energy Work For You - Energy Security Update

Good news from Parliament!

I know that for residents of Nuneaton, the cost of living is the number one issues families are facing, especially with the instability caused by the US-Iran war. The Labour government is committed to bringing down the cost of living for families; one of the key ways we’re doing this is by securing our renewable energy sector.

Energy Security: 🔒

The Labour Government has set out a series of new measures to deliver energy security and sovereignty for the UK, in response to global instability caused by the war in the Middle East. With the UK Government facing the second fossil fuel price spikes in less than 5 years, this Labour Government believes that the only route to economic security and sustainable energy is through homegrown clean energy.

Reforms include:

  • Opening the public estate for a major expansion of renewable energy generation using brownfield land, industrial sites and railway embankments.

  • Reforming the planning system to allow for essential clean energy infrastructure to be built without the red tape, and creating new regulatory pathways to speed up grid connections.

  • Introducing new fixed-priced contracts for electricity generators to ensure that prices will not surge in the event of future gas price spikes.

  • Mandating community benefits so communities that host new onshore wind and solar will directly benefit from the projects through community funding.

  • Investing a record amount in the biggest nuclear building programme in half a century.

OFGEM: ⚡️

Last week, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced its strategy to overhaul the energy market so that it properly stands up for families and businesses.

The previous Government let this country down. Energy consumers have had to deal with suppliers collapsing, scandals, delays to compensation claims and poor customer service, all while the big bosses rake in tidy bonuses at your expense – the Conservatives not only let this go unchallenged, but they also rewarded it.

Reforms include:

  • Powers for OFGEM to ban energy company bosses’ bonuses if they break the rules.

  • Stronger powers for Ofgem to enforce consumer law directly, meaning that it will not need to go through lengthy court processes to make sure customers get what they are owed.

  • Measures to ensure energy bosses act on behalf of consumers, rather than lining their pockets.

  • Reforms to Ofgem’s remit to focus on economic and consumer protection.

Cost of Living and Fuel: 🚗

Constituents of Nuneaton will be pleased to know that the Government is tackling the cost of living crisis head on, helping to alleviate some of the extra pressures placed on families due to the rising costs of fuel.

The Prime Minister has pledged:

  • To cap energy bills until the end of June, saving the average household £117.

  • To extend the cut to fuel duty until September, as well as introducing the cheap fuel finder to make it easier for drivers to choose the lowest price.

  • To continue to work with international partners for a swift resolution to the conflict in the Middle East.

These measures are about delivering long-term energy security while providing tangible relief for working families - ensuring people in Nuneaton and across the UK are better protected from global shocks and rising costs. You’re more than welcome to get in contact with me at Jodie.gosling.mp@parliament.uk for any more information.
