Kings Speech - What does it mean for Nuneaton!

Good news from Parliament!

This week’s King’s Speech set out a bold programme to deliver real change for communities like ours here in Nuneaton. I know that for many local families, the cost of living, access to affordable housing, and reliable public services remain the biggest concerns — and this Labour Government is taking action to address them head-on.

One of the key ways we’re doing this is by investing in Britain’s future: boosting renewable energy to bring bills down, rebuilding our steel industry to protect jobs, and strengthening trade to help British businesses grow. At the same time, we’re delivering long-overdue reforms — from cleaning up our water system and modernising the NHS, to ensuring veterans get the support they deserve and expanding social housing so more families can access a safe, secure home.

This is a programme focused on security, stability, and opportunity — delivering for Nuneaton and ensuring that working people feel the benefits of a stronger, fairer economy.

  • European Partnership Bill

The European Partnership Bill will create new opportunities across British industry. By aligning standards with the Common Market area, trade will become significantly easier, reducing red tape and costs for over £450 billion of exports each year. The Brexit deal has cost the taxpayer billions and plunged our economy and industry into unstable waters. This Labour Government is striving to grow our economy and revitalise our industry, signing new expanded trade deals with India and the United States, as well as our largest partner the European Union.

  • Clean Water Bill

The Clean Water Bill will pick up where the Water (Special Measures) Act left off. It will create a new Water Industry regulator, replacing OFWAT and departments of the Environment Agency. This regulator will have the power to enforce against the economic and environmental performance of the water industry, with its priority being to ensure a more proactive and delivery-focussed regime. This will return our Water industry back to basics, ensuring it prioritises customer satisfaction and environmental impact over profit margins.

  • Steel Industry (nationalisation) Bill

The Steel Industry (Nationalisation) Bill will re-nationalise British Steel. Across Britain the need for Steel is growing as development increases. It is vital we maintain a strong domestic supply to ensure important projects are not delayed by foreign conflict or interference. Nationalisation will safeguard over 2,000 jobs and ensure vital resources are readily available.

  • Energy Independence Bill

Our reliance on imported gas and fossil fuels is driving energy costs up as domestic prices are tied to the cost of imports. In order to reduce bills and safeguard energy supply this Government will introduce a bill to improve investment in renewable and low-carbon energy. Renewable energy costs around 1/3 that of imported energy, offering colossal savings to consumers. The Government will also increase the tax on profits to 55%, investing money back into renewable projects.

  • Armed Forces Bill

Our Borough is forever tied to its service. The 30th Signal Regiment and Queen’s Gurkha Signals have the freedom of our Borough, whilst several of our roads remember the sons of Nuneaton who never made it home. The Armed Forces Bill will establish the Armed Forces Covenant in law, ensuring all veterans receive support in employment, housing, and services. It will establish a new defence housing service to ensure service families no longer have to live in squalid homes, and improve the service justice system so that all personnel can obtain better, impartial support.

  • National Security Bill and the Tackling State Threats Bill

These bills will bolster National Security by closing loopholes in current legislation. This includes creating a specific offence of sharing material that “glorifies, trivialises, or normalises” serious violence and disorder, whilst also expanding current anti-terror laws to allow the proscription of state-backed organisations such as Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

  • Hillsborough Law (Public Office Accountability Bill)

37 years have passed since the horrific tragedy at Hillsborough. For too many families justice was delayed as public authorities worked to cover up their wrongdoing and pass the blame to the victims. The tenacity and conviction of families revealed that public bodies had lied. We must never allow public bodies to hide injustice again, and that is why this Government will introduce a Hillsborough law, ensuring that public bodies act with candour, transparency and frankness, creating an offence in relation to public officials or bodies who mislead the public.

  • NHS Modernisation Bill

The NHS modernisation bill will help this Government deliver on its promise to improve our NHS. Whilst waiting lists continue to fall and treatment times improve doctors complain that antiquated systems lead to significant duplication, keeping vital personnel away from patients. As a result we will legislate to deliver the single patient record, where all patient data is stored in one place, reducing duplication and ensuring all professionals can see the information they need, whenever they need it. Alongside this we will be abolishing NHS England and will be reforming ICBs, to ensure that our public bodies are focussed on delivering improved services for residents.

  • Police Reform Bill

The Government will reform our Police forces to ensure that they are more effective. This includes consolidating forces, creating newer and larger forces operating on greater economies of scale, as well as introducing a new national police force tasked with investigating the most serious offences.

  • Social Housing Renewal Bill

The Social Housing Renewal Bill will work to ensure that more people are able to live in an affordable and stable home. Backed by the £39 Billion Social and Affordable Home Programme, the largest programme in living memory, this will ensure that more than 300,000 families will have a safe and secure home. In order to allow this new properties will be exempt from the Right-to-Buy for 35 years whilst victims of domestic abuse will receive new protections allowing them to stay in their properties.

  • Remediation Bill

The Remediation Bill will create a legal duty to remediate defective cladding, will create a national register of defective cladding encompassing all buildings over 11m tall, and give regulators powers to sanction reluctant building owners. Local authorities and Homes England will also receive the power to undertake remedial works and recover costs from the landlord.

  • Commonhold and Leaseholders Bill

Leaseholders all over Nuneaton have been struggling with unfair fleece-hold charges, unregulated ground rents, and unjustified fees. The Commonhold and Leasehold Bill will end the feudal leasehold system by capping ground rents at £250 per year, repeal the draconian powers of maintenance charge enforcement, and introduce a ban on the use of leasehold for new flats. The Bill will also establish a new framework for Commonhold ownership, allowing residents to collectively own and manage their buildings directly, rather than through a third-party freeholder. This will give homeowners greater control over building management, service charges, and long-term decision-making.
