Changes to Leasehold

Every year, homeowners pay £600 million to freeholders, and in 2024 service charges reached an average of £2,300 a year, increasing well above inflation. The government recognises that working people are under real pressure with the cost of living and is taking firm action to support them, including ensuring leaseholders are treated fairly and protected from unreasonable charges by freeholders.
The Government is capping ground rent at £250 a year and moving to a peppercorn after 40 years. We are also committed to banning new leasehold flats and moving to a fully commonhold system, where residents have collective ownership of their building.
As a member of the Labour for Leaseholders group in Parliament, and having worked hard to assist leaseholders in my constituency, dealing with poor service from property management companies and rising service charges, I welcome these changes. I know they will make a huge difference for Leaseholders in Nuneaton and the villages.
I urge all constituents who have any experience with leasehold to engage with this consultation and have your say in how the Government proceeds with these changes. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to get in contact with my office.
