Backing British Steel
Why Protecting Britain’s Steel Industry Matters — Reflections from Nuneaton
Steel runs through the story of our country like a spine. It built the Britain we know, from the railways that connected our towns, to the ships that defended our shores, to the factories that powered the Industrial Revolution. It is not just a product; it is a symbol of national strength, pride, and resilience.
And today, as the MP for Nuneaton, I want to share why Labour’s action to safeguard British steelmaking is not only necessary, but long overdue.
Steel Is Essential to Britain’s Future
For too long, governments have allowed our steel industry to decline. Communities were hollowed out. Production shrank. British steelworkers were forced to compete on unfair global terms, while investment at home dried up.
But steel remains fundamental to our national life:
It goes into the cars we build here in Britain.
It forms the backbone of wind turbines and grid infrastructure that will cut bills and power our transition to clean energy.
It is essential for the battleships, submarines, and defence systems that keep our country safe.
If steel is used here, it should be made here.
Labour Is Taking Action, Real Action, to Protect British Steel
Last year, Parliament was recalled to pass the Steel Industry Special Measures Act. Without it, the blast furnaces at British Steel in Scunthorpe would have gone dark — and with them, Britain’s ability to produce steel.
That emergency action kept the furnaces lit.
But it also revealed a hard truth: a long‑term commercial solution with the current owners simply wasn’t possible in a way that protected workers or taxpayers.
That is why Labour has now passed the Steel Nationalisation Bill at Third Reading — giving the Government the power to bring British Steel into public ownership when it is in the national interest.
Public ownership will allow us to secure the future of British Steel, protect thousands of good jobs, and ensure that Britain never again finds itself dependent on foreign steel in an increasingly unstable world.
A New Age of British Industrialisation
Nationalising British Steel is only one part of Labour’s plan.
Our Steel Strategy, announced in March, is a landmark investment in Britain’s industrial future:
£2.5 billion through the National Wealth Fund to rebuild our steel sector.
A target to increase domestic steel production from to 50% of UK demand.
A clear commitment that electric arc furnaces are the future of British steelmaking.
Stronger protections against unfair trade and global overcapacity.
This is about restoring Britain’s manufacturing base, not for nostalgia, but for national resilience.
It is about hope, confidence, and faith in the future.
Why This Matters for Nuneaton
Here in Nuneaton, we know the value of good, secure, skilled jobs. We know what manufacturing means to a community — the pride, the purpose, the stability it brings.
The steel produced in Scunthorpe is used in:
Cars
Turbines
Fighter jets
Infrastructure across the country
When we protect British Steel, we protect supply chains, industries, and jobs in towns like ours.
This is about rebuilding the foundations of a stronger, fairer economy — one that works for working people.
A Debt to Britain’s Steel Communities
We owe a huge debt to the steelworkers and steel communities who forged the backbone of modern Britain. Their work built the railways we rely on, the turbines that power our homes, and the ships that defend our nation.
Protecting steel is not just an economic decision. It is a moral one.
It is about honoring that legacy — and ensuring it continues for generations to come.
Looking Ahead
The world is becoming more unstable. We see it every day. In times like these, Britain must be able to rely on its own industrial strength.
Labour’s action on steel is a commitment to national security, economic resilience, and community prosperity.
It is a commitment to the belief that Britain can — and will — build again.
And as the MP for Nuneaton, I am proud to stand behind that mission.
